NEWBORN FAQs

When is the best time to have Newborn photos taken?

For posed newborn photos, the ideal time is between 6-14 days old, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curled up. This is the easiest stage to gently pose babies and capture those classic newborn images.

Posed sessions can still be photographed beautifully up to around 30 days old, although they may take a little longer as babies are usually more alert by this stage.

Lifestyle newborn sessions are much more flexible with age, as they focus on natural moments and connection rather than posing.

When is the best time to book in a Newborn session

Most families book their newborn photography session during pregnancy, usually in the second or third trimester, to reserve space around their baby's due date.

Because babies arrive on their own schedule, your due date is used as a guide. Once your baby arrives, we simply confirm the session date within the first couple of weeks.

Booking during pregnancy helps ensure availability during that ideal 6-14 day window when babies are naturally sleepy and curled.

Where will Newborn sessions take place?

Sessions can take place in my Christchurch studio - located in Bishopdale, in your home for a relaxed lifestyle feel, or outdoors at a beautiful Canterbury location.

Studio sessions are perfect for timeless newborn portraits and controlled lighting, while in-home or outdoor sessions create a more natural and relaxed atmosphere.

What do we wear?

Soft, neutral colours and simple textures photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on connection and emotion rather than clothing. Colours such as cream, beige, soft grey, white, and earthy tones work particularly well.

For studio sessions, I offer a client wardrobe for mums and siblings, with a selection of beautiful pieces that photograph perfectly.

I’m always happy to help guide you with outfit choices before your session so you can feel relaxed and confident.

How long does a newborn photo session last?

Session length can vary depending on the type of session and the needs of your family.

Posed Newborn sessions are usually the longest, as they are completely baby-led and allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddles and settling if needed.

My goal is always to keep sessions calm and enjoyable so you never feel rushed.

What if my baby arrives earlier or later than expected?

That’s completely normal and nothing to worry about. When you book your newborn session, I reserve space around your due date rather than a fixed day.

Once your baby arrives, simply get in touch and we will confirm the session date within the first couple of weeks.

This flexibility allows us to photograph your baby at the ideal time while still accommodating those unpredictable arrival dates.

Are parents and siblings included?

Yes, parents and siblings are always welcome to be included in your session, and these images often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the day.

The Wrapped Mini Newborn session is a baby-only session, but parents and siblings can absolutely be added if you would like family images as well for an added fee.

Capturing the connection between your baby and family creates beautiful, timeless photographs you will treasure for years to come.

What Happens If My Baby Doesn’t Settle?

Newborn sessions are always baby-led, which means we take things slowly and allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddles and settling when needed.

With over a decade of experience photographing newborns, I work patiently and gently to help babies feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the session.

There is never any pressure to rush, and we simply follow your baby’s lead.
