One of the questions I get asked most often is: what age is best for newborn photos?

The most popular time for newborn photos is usually when your baby is between 6 and 14 days old.

This is often considered the ideal window because newborns tend to be:

  • sleepier
  • curlier
  • more settled
  • happy being both gently wrapped and unwrapped

That tiny, fresh newborn stage changes so quickly, which is why many Christchurch families choose to photograph it early.

Why 6 to 14 days is often ideal

In those first couple of weeks, babies are still adjusting to life outside the womb. They often sleep deeply and naturally tuck into those soft newborn positions that

parents love.

This can make it easier to capture:

  • sleepy portraits
  • close-up detail shots
  • wrapped and un-wrapped images
  • beautiful parent and baby moments

It’s also the stage where your baby still has that unmistakable brand-new feel that changes so quickly in the first few weeks.

Is it too late after two weeks?

Absolutely not.

While 6 to 14 days is often considered the ideal window, beautiful newborn photos can still be taken after that. Older newborns may be more alert, more awake, and a little more stretched out, but that can be lovely too.

Sometimes this means your gallery includes more:

  • open eyes
  • little expressions
  • stretches and movement
  • natural interaction with parents

Every stage has something special to capture.

What if my baby is already a few weeks old?

Please don’t stress if your baby is already 3 weeks or older - you have absolutely not missed your chance for beautiful photos.

Newborn photography does not have to look exactly one way to be beautiful. While younger newborns are often sleepier, older babies can still create a gorgeous gallery full of connection, detail, and personality.

The most important thing is choosing a photographer who will work gently with your baby and follow their lead.

Should I book before baby arrives?

If you are still pregnant, it is always best to book your newborn session before baby arrives.

Most newborn photographers in Christchurch book sessions around your due date, then confirm the final date once your baby is here. Booking ahead helps make sure you have a spot saved during that early newborn stage.

So, what age is best for newborn photos?

If you love the classic sleepy newborn style, the best age is usually between 6 and 14 days old.

But if your baby is older than that, it is still absolutely worth enquiring. Beautiful images can be captured at many stages, and those early weeks are worth remembering no matter what.

If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Christchurch, I’d love to help you capture this special season in a way that feels relaxed, natural, and timeless.
